Keep looking

Dear classmates,
This is just to remind everyone to keep looking for any lost classmates. Yes, we have celebrated our 50th reunion, and a great one it was!! That doesn't mean we will stop there. We had a wonderful 51st reunion and plan to have a great 52nd! We will be able to continue seeing each other at least once a year if we all keep looking. Remember to check this blog for any updates and don't hesitate to leave a comment with your suggestions for our future reunions.
Have a great year and we look forward to seeing each and every one of you next Spring.

CHS Class of 1960 has 50th Reunion at Callaway Gardens

For those of you who were not able to attend  the 50th Reunion at Callaway Gardens last year,  you might be interested in the following write-up.  It was a very special event.  Leave us comments of your ideas for our 55th coming up in 2015!   See you next year in Ozark!  Ann & Jesse Adams

April 20-23, 2010                                                            Callaway Gardens

The Carroll High School, Class of 1960, held their fiftieth reunion at Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia, on April 20th through April 23rd.  Classmates began arriving Tuesday afternoon, April 20th, to a huge poster in the lobby of The Mountain Creek Inn commemorating the 50th Reunion of the CHS, Class of ’60. Greeted by Jesse and Ann Adams, James and Jan Lisenby, and Don and Margie McCall, classmates were given personalized hospitality bags with special Callaway information, an agenda of the festivities, CHS 50th Reunion bottled Blue Springs water along with munchies and goodies including a monogrammed Christmas Ornament, and Uncle Jesse’s Heavenly Fudge.  After checking in, classmates gathered in the Vineyard Green Lounge for food and fellowship that lasted late into the evening.  Some classmates had not seen each other since graduation.  Classmates from California, New Hampshire, Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida and Alabama were in attendance during the three day celebration.
Wednesday was open for touring the Gardens, The Little White House, and other area attractions.   Additional classmates arrived during the day Wednesday.  Everyone met in the Mountain Creek Courtyard at 5:30 for group photos, and Jan Lisenby, an honorary member of the class, finally got everyone quiet and still enough to snap the above photo.  It was not easy.
Meet and Greet was held from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Courtyard with the Banquet Festivities beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Sweet Bay Banquet Room at the Mountain Creek Inn.
Wendell Payne, president of the class, welcomed everyone to Callaway and the Reunion, and thanked Jesse Adams for starting the annual reunions four years ago that ultimately lead to the 50th being held at Callaway Gardens.   Don McCall, class member and a Gideons Director, recalled the special bond that the class has had over the years.  Thanking God for traveling mercies that brought so many from so far to this special occasion, he blessed the reunion and the meal.
A delicious banquet, highlighting a prime rib carving station and walnut crusted breast of chicken with fresh salads and vegetables were enjoyed by all.  Four delectable desserts, including a special Callaway creation for diabetics provided a scrumptious close to a delightful meal enjoyed by forty-four classmates and twenty-six spouses.
Jesse Adams, reunion chairman, thanked everyone for their individual efforts to attend, making this a very special occasion for all.
As thanks for all her assistance in helping Jesse with the class addresses,
e-mails, and special mailings to make this a reality, a special proclamation declaring Jan Barkett Lisenby, an honorary member of the Class of ’60 was  presented by Joe Walker.  Jan is the wife of classmate and special friend, James Lisenby,
A large display board with framed photos of the fifteen deceased class members showing their birth and death dates was prepared by Faye Enfinger Early, and stood to the right of a fifteen branch candelabra.  Billy Walker and Ann Adams gave a moving tribute to the fifteen deceased class members.  A fellow classmate lit a candle for each deceased member as their name was called and their photo appeared on an eight foot screen.
Ann Adams recited the following poem she wrote four years ago as a tribute to the deceased class members.

Deceased Classmates Tribute

Fifty years have come and fifty years have gone
Since we walked Carroll High’s hallowed halls of learning.
Some of you left us quickly, others struggled with deep yearning
For the pain to end, and your earthly journey to be o’er,
Now you’ve crossed that great divide to the Eastern shore.

Your earthly struggles are over now . . . gone is all your pain,
Whether God swiftly took your hand and heaven was your gain,
Or you fought long and hard, this life’s battle with death,
Our prayer is that you now live anew with Heaven’s breath!

As we light these candles in your memory, here tonight,
And call your name by the glow of their precious light,
Gone from our sight, but always in our heart,
We pause to remember and make each of you a cherished part
Of this our CHS, Class of ’60, Fiftieth Reunion Celebration,
For each of you were one of God’s Special Creations!
Billy Walker then entertained the group with a thundering video presentation that began with the Flying Thunderbirds splitting the sky.  It highlighted every class member that has attended any of the past four annual reunions, and photos of the Class of ’60 Senior Beauties, Favorites, Pageants, Clubs, and Sports Teams.  As you may remember the 1959 CHS Football Team was the best Carroll High has ever seen.  We are quite proud of that fact.  There was a copy of the DVD in each classmate’s hospitality bag.  Thank you, again, Billy for a wonderful presentation.
Wendell Miller was a Salutatorian of the Class of ’60.  At the Graduation Exercises, May 20, 1960, Wendell spoke on “The Brink of Change.”  All agreed that President Obama is not original with his “Change” agenda; Wendell addressed “Change” in 1960!  At the reunion, he expanded on that subject with an interesting slant on change entitled, “Reflections, Changes Driven by Behavioral Acceptance.”  It was a sobering presentation of just how far we as a people have come in fifty years, or maybe how far we have gone, depending upon your personal point of view.  It was very enlightening and thought provoking.
To close the festivities, Mickey Andrews, co-captain of the 1960 CHS winning football team, and, retired Florida State University Defensive Coordinator, carried the group down memory lane with his version of “Memories”.  Mickey shared memories of the CHS teachers, coaches, and administrators that played a great part in molding the character of this special class.  A most enjoyable and rewarding evening was had by all.
In his closing remarks, Jesse Adams, said, “As long as you wish, we will continue these special annual reunions until the last one turns the lights out.”
Thursday morning, following a Dutch treat breakfast, the “Antique Thespians” were the highlight of the program.  The “Antique Thespians” are members of the Thespian Society who performed in either or both of the Junior or Senior Plays.  They were introduced by their “stage” name, from the play programs, as they entertained the group with presentations both funny and inspiring.
Addresses, e-mails and cell phone numbers were exchanged as classmates from eight states, other than Alabama, fondly said, “See you next year.”  No good-byes for this group.
During the three day festivities many discussions took place as to just what made this particular class so special.  Maybe it was because we lost the Senior Trip and donated those saved up monies to various school projects. When handled correctly loss always makes us stronger and closer to those with whom we experience the loss.  Part of it, we are sure, was the guiding hand of gifted teachers and coaches who in 1960 could still discipline and correct us along life’s path.
Maybe it was the special blend of world-traveled military students, all the boys and girls from the county junior high schools that joined us in the ninth grade, and the unique way we all became the first class to attend all four years of high school and graduate from the new Carroll High School. But the bottom line, we all believe, is the moral fiber and strength of character of a generation privileged to grow up in a small southern town, knowing right from wrong, when times were slower and life was richer in conversation and relationships.
We didn’t have cell phones or e-mail, but we had the party line gossip connection!
We didn’t have the computer but we had Mrs. Ragsdale, Marie Horn, Kathryn Brown, Nina Carpenter, the one-and-only Pete Moseley, and the World Book of Knowledge encyclopedia.
We didn’t have you-tube, but we had Virginia Huey!  And, what a delight that was!
Thank you, Lord, for the privilege of spending our teenage years in Ozark, Alabama at Carroll High School during the Fabulous Fifties!
                                                                     Fondly,
                                                                     CHS Class of ‘60

Candle lighting ceremony

The weekend of April 29 - May 1, 2011 was a weekend to see and visit friends from the Carroll High School of Ozark, Alabama, class of 1960. After a whirlwind 50th reunion at Callaway Gardens the class met again in 2011 in Ozark, Alabama. Friday night everyone met at the home of James Lisenby to meet and greet after a day of travel. Saturday morning saw some playing golf, visiting Fort Rucker and taking a leisurely walk through the DABG, Dothan Area Botanical Gardens. Saturday night everyone met at Colby's in Ozark for a buffet meal and to reminisce about the old days. All enjoyed a DVD presentation, by Billy Walker, of the 50th class reunion last year. Class members who have already gone before were honored by lighting a candle in their memory. Sunday morning began with a Church service with Wendall Payne giving the message at the Westview Chapel. More photos will be added of the weekend fun as they come in. Please feel free to post a comment by clicking on the "comments" below or join as a "follower."
Safe travels to all who came. See you all next year!!
