I received the class information. Thanks a lot.

I don’t think you know that my wife of 51 years passed away on January 31, 2019.

She had fought a long {6+ years} battle with ovarian cancer which included trips to UAB for surgery and doctor visits and many, many trips to the 

Oncology group in Dothan for chemo therapy. They tried every chemo treatment available for ovarian cancer and nothing worked.

She passed away peacefully 1 week after the doctor put her on Hospice.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop and I hope we can meet whenever we have another reunion.

 Margaret Dowling Lonquist has had an issue with a tendon in her leg and  has had 3 surgeries so far. She is going to meet with her doctor in Chicago to see about her progress and what she should do next. She is in a rehab facility in Illinois and has been since June.  She request we all pray for her, for healing, for physical & emotional strength, and that she will be able to return to her home in Tampa soon. Her phone number is (727) 741-8691. Sad loss of Billy Thrasher

 EWELL COMMUNITY…Mr. William R. “Bill” Thrasher, Jr., a resident of the Ewell Community, near Ozark, died late Friday evening, August 13, 2021, in the emergency room of Dale Medical Center. He was 79.

            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 17, 2021, in the Fuqua Bankston Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Dr. Billy Gaither officiating. Graveside services, with military honors, will follow in Ewell Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.

            Flowers will be accepted.

            Mr. Thrasher, son of the late William Robert Thrasher, Sr. and Carolyn Celesta Brooks Thrasher, was a native of Thomasville, Georgia. He moved to the Ozark area at an early age,   where he played on the Carroll High School Basketball team and was a 1960 Graduate of Carroll High School. He immediately joined the United States Navy and was deployed on the first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Washington-Carver and recently participated in the 50th reunion celebration in Norfolk, Virginia. Mr. Thrasher also sailed on the USS Harder and on the USS Will Rogers during his service. He received the National Service Defense Medal and also played on the United States Navy Men’s Basketball team. Mr. Thrasher left the Navy after serving nine years and joined Texas Instruments in Houston where he helped pioneer the first program that brought voice to computer. He received his Bachelors’ Degree in Business from Troy University after returning home. He was formerly employed with Hughes Missile Electronics in Eufaula, Sikorsky in Troy and Movie Gallery in Dothan in his long career in logistics. Mr. Thrasher was preceded in death in addition to his parents, by a daughter, Nina Gore, mother-in-law, Bessie Moore and father-in-law, Ross Moore.

            Surviving relatives include his wife, Jilda Moore Thrasher; children, Chris Thrasher (Jill), John Thrasher (Theresa), Samantha Johnson (Shane), Shannon Schwab (David), and Cecile Thrasher; four brothers, Horace Thrasher (Kaye), Jack Thrasher (Bobbie), Greg Thrasher (Linda), and Ricky Thrasher (Janet); grandchildren, Arron, Cyle (Melissa), Daisha (Lachelle), Elizabeth, Victoria, Jessie (Amerika), Katherine, Walker, and Julianna; great-grandchildren, Patrick, Lane, and Brooklynn; special nieces, Connie Saetang (Aunsorn), and JeJeania Pruehs; many more nieces, nephews, and extended/adopted family.

Obituary of Shirley Mae Chancey

Ms. Shirley Mae Chancey, a resident of Ozark, passed away Friday evening, March 26, 2021, in Ozark Health and Rehabilitation. She was 78. Funeral services for Ms. Chancey will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, March 30, 2021, in the Chapel of Holman Funeral Home and Cremations in Ozark with Reverend Dr. Billy D. Gaither, Reverend Neal Brown and Reverend Michael Lawler officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Ozark 12:30 until service time on Tuesday. Born May 8, 1942 in Ozark to Curtis P. and Effie Mae Chancey and baby sister to Curtis Loyd Chancey. After working her entire career at the Bank of Ozark (in Ozark and Midland City) and then SouthTrust Bank (in Dothan and Ozark locations), she retired in 2004 from her outside drive-through in Ozark. She loved her church, Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, and was a lifelong member attending and supporting every ministry, event, and service. She didn’t have a favorite hymn—she knew and loved them all, singing in the choir, and serving as church pianist for over five decades. She loved all God’s children, especially the little ones as she led Vacation Bible School for over fifteen years and served as a children’s Sunday School Teacher for over five decades. She volunteered as church secretary developing and publishing the monthly church newsletters and Sunday Bulletins for over 46 years. She loved doing all sorts of crafts and working Pleasant Hill’s Annual Bazaar. She served in numerous positions within Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church, including Church Treasurer and UMW President, and was active in the Dothan District UMW. She loved God, her family, her church family, her bank work family, and her customer family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother. She is survived by her niece, Carol Chancey, and her sister-in-law, Valeta Chancey. She is also survived by her many cousins. The family would like to express their appreciation to the Dale Medical Center ER doctors and nurses, Ozark Health and Rehab staff, and Day Spring Palliative Care and Hospice. Obituary of Billy Ray Gassett

Mr. Billy Ray Gassett, a resident of Skipperville, died Wednesday, December 16, 2020, at his home with his loving family by his side. He was 78 years old. Funeral services for Mr. Gassett will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 20, 2020, from Morgan Baptist Church with Reverend Tim Sewell and Reverend Kyle Robertson officiating. Interment will follow in Beersheba Cemetery, Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends Saturday at the funeral home in Ozark from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. Serving as pallbearers will be Greg Blocker, Ronnie Blocker, Edsel Watson, Don Snell, Kolten Walker and Zach McDaniel. Mr. Gassett was born June 17, 1942, in Skipperville, Alabama where he was a life-long resident. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1960 and farmed all of his life. On March 20, 1986, Billy Ray married his loving wife, Jan Watson. He worked with the United States Postal Service as a rural mail carrier for the Skipperville Post Office, retiring in 1998. He was a member of Morgan Baptist Church and the Dale County Cattlemen’s Association. Mr. Gassett was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow Gassett and Hattie Ruth Stuckey Gassett; one sister, Nellie Ruth Gassett; and two brothers-in-law, Bobbie Blocker and Charles Mitchell. Survivors include his wife, Jan Watson Gassett; one daughter and son-in-law, Krista and Randy Agerton; one son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Vicki Morrison; two grandsons, Liam Agerton and Cooper Morrison; his mother-in-law, Lurelle Watson; one brother and sister-in-law, Pete and Martha Gassett all of Skipperville; two sisters, Sara Blocker of Geneva and Ann Mitchell of Graceville; one sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Jill and Ricky Laney; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Edsel and Lydia Watson all of Skipperville. Walter Dyson's Mother

 Walter Dyson's Mother died last week at the age of 107. Impressive!

Mrs. Lorene Brown Dyson, a resident of Ozark (Brown’s Cross Roads), passed away Thursday morning, October 29, 2020, at her home. She was 107 years old. Funeral services for Mrs. Dyson will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 31, 2020, from Chalkhead Baptist Church with Reverend Michael Woodham officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, Holman Funeral Home and Cremations of Ozark directing. The family will receive friends and family in the church Saturday morning from 10:00 A.M. until service time. The family will gather at her son’s home, Robert and Reta Dyson, 5353 County Road 18, Ozark, Alabama. Pallbearers will be Chris Boyington, Adam Dyson, Andrew Dyson, Brian Patterson, Jamie Marek, and Todd Simmons. The family requests that social distancing be observed and masks be worn. Lorene was born September 30, 1913 in Ozark, Alabama to the late Lev Mathison Brown and Ollie O. Newton Brown. She was a member of Chalkhead Baptist Church and the Lois Powers Sunday School Class. She loved to quilt, sew, cook and work in her vegetable garden and flower beds. She was famous for her homemade biscuits. Lorene loved family get-togethers, especially cooking for everyone. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Fletcher Dyson, Sr.; her son-in-law, Jerry Boyington; one grandson, Jay Boyington; her brothers, Sam, Glen, Houston and Harlon Brown; her sisters, Elon Walding, Kathleen Vaughn, and Annie Lois Andrews. Left to cherish her memories are her children: Walter (Judy) Dyson, Jr., Kathy (Fred) Holland, Robert (Reta) Dyson, all of Ozark and Linda Boyington of Fairhope, AL; her grandchildren: Michelle (Jamie) Marek of Brooks, GA, April (Todd) Simmons of Ozark, Chris (Amanda) Boyington of Fairhope, Kim (Brian) Patterson, Adam (Terri) Dyson all of Ozark, Shanna Boyington of Fairhope, Andrew (Jennifer) Dyson of Ozark; her great grandchildren: Anna Boyington of Fairhope, Jake and Judson Patterson, Trevor, Jesse, AJ, Emma and Abbie Dyson, Jeremy, Seth and Braden Simmons all of Ozark; her brother, Shirley Brown of Cairo, GA.
